Avskum: Uppror underifrån

Avskum has apparently been doing their shit since 1982, their shit being playing aggressive punk music with nobody caring. Anyways, their latest release “Uppror underifrån” has been sent to us to review, and yours truly latched on to it pretty much immediately. What do these close-to-in-their-forties misfits have to offer then. Well, let’s just say that the fact that they haven’t hit the big success despite being in the game for almost thirty years might serve as a indication of the quality we’re dealing with here.
Regarding the way “Uppror Underifrån” sounds, it should be clear I’m a total sucker for this kind of production. The drums sound real, the guitars sharp yet kinda thin and to top it all of the bass sound is awesome, rumbling and distorted, just the way it should be. Perhaps not the way to go if you play death metal, I really can’t imagine anything better for hc punk. My only problem with the sound is the vocals, which is a real shame because this will definitely drag don the final score one point. My problem is, I don’t think they’re harsh enough. Also, the lyrics, which are both in Swedish and English, suck from what I can hear, you really could and should be more creative in this area. Anyways, you don’t really listen to punk for the lyrical experience.
The real problem however, is the sub-standard songwriting on this disc. I have by now listened through it around five times (thankfully it’s only about half an hour long) and so far no song has stuck with me. Wait that’s not true, actually. Two songs, or to be more exact, choruses have stuck with me. Not because of their quality and catchiness though, but because of the lyrics being hammered into your skull over and over again, ‘til it’s virtually impossible to not remember them:

That’s some creative shit, right there.
It is finally time for the verdict so all rise. Avskum is found guilty of not being relevant whatsoever and is sentenced to a lifetime in the fringes of Swedish hardcore, with parole coming up just in time for their next album. They probably won’t make it however.
